A Beginner's Guide to GPS Devices
{} What is GPS?
GPS simply stands for Global Positioning System, developed by the United States Department of Defense in the late 70's. It became fully available for civilian use in the mid 80's.
The US is the country with the most users of GPS devices and this can be attributed to the fact that it was invented there. GPS is also said to be a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) device.
{} How does it work?
The GPS is a positioning and navigation device. It establishes the latitude and longitude of a place by calculating the time of signals from about three or four GPS satellites.
So in simple terms, the GPS device connects to the GPS satellites in space to give an accurate location, position, routing or direction of a receiver or location on earth. This is the primary function of the GPS device.
You can call this advanced map-reading.
{} How Accurate are the GPS devices?
GPS devices are designed to establish connection with up to four or more GPS satellites in space in order to give positioning results. However, for an accurate connection with the GPS satellites in space, many factors have to be in place.
The weather condition must be very friendly. Unfriendly weather conditions like rain, humidity, etc. can interfere with the GPS signals and then the result from the GPS device might not be very accurate.
The presence of tall building, gas stations, etc. can also impede GPS signals.
{} Applications and Uses of the GPS devices
GPS devices were initially designed for military use only, and due to this, most of its uses and applications are military.
- To locate dangerous weapons like bombs, etc.
- To locate a target or place in a unknown camp or territory
- When a solider is down for example, he can be easily traced and rescued with the aid of a GPS device
- It helps to ease communication and activity among army troops, as they take charge of different targets
- Civilians can also locate places in new areas by map-reading using a GPS device
- A lost friend can be located with a GPS device if he has one.
GPS devices are very portable as they are integrated into cars, phones, motorbikes, airplanes, watches, etc. Meanwhile, the GPS is still growing in popularity and usage, international wise, as many countries are yet to experience even "a glass of water" of the GPS technology.
