4Great Product for First Timers
By Student
My wife and I had little experience with GPS gimmicks other than using google maps on my android phone, so needless to say, I was impressed with this product. The original objection to this model, though, has to be the price. Why is it at least twice the price of other, units? Probably the built in camera, which takes breathtakingly good photos. If you don't care with regards to this feature, then you may probably do with a less costly model.

My wife belongs to a mommy and me group that goes geocaching and this product was the talk of the group when she showed it to everyone. In addition to being easy to use for just in regards to anyone, it comes with the above-mentioned 3.2 megapixel camera for geotagging (I do not forget not too long ago when a regular camera with 3.2 megapixels would have cost $200), memo recorder, etc. to help capture your experiences and "adventures" --even if they do implicate toddlers! In fact, just regarding the only things that this model doesn't have that might be found in more costly units are altimeter, turn by turn directions, and FRS type radio (which would have been nice). But you're not using this to get around town, so turn by turn directions are probably irrelevant. For much less cash just get a Tom Tom, or whatever. No, this GPS is for the entry level, severe adventurer.

The body itself feels very rugged and lasting and is water resistant. You get the sentiment that this thing may take some abuse and keep on going. And that's good, 'cause when you're venturing all over the icy wastes of Patagonia, you don't want your GPS breaking down. Or, if you have a two year old who likes to throw things...

One problem that we had was that the batteries shipped with the unit were dead on arrival. When we installed new batteries, the device still did not work. We actually thought that we'd rec'd a defective unit until we tried yet a third set of batteries and it worked fine. I genuinely don't know what happened or if these things just need VERY strong batteries to commence up successfully. Time will tell.

The bottom line is this: If you want a full featured GPS unit for severe use, I don't think you may do much better than this. Yes, it's a bit highpriced and, as such, probably aimed to the semi-serious trekker, not an individual who wants to see where they are in the mall.

Good product. I like it, one star deduction for the lack of a radio and the fact that it didn't work right away out of the box.

5Seriously cool Hiking GPS
By Maek
I in truth got this for my wife who runs a Girl Scout troop. This is an exceedingly fun tool for her troop (as well as for her, let's face it!) which does more than just function as a basic GPS.

In addition to making sure that you don't get lost, there are a number of other cool features:

- See a cool feature or landmark that you'd love to catalog? Take a quick picture using the built-in 3.2 MP camera along with your GPS emplacement so you may go back and visit antecedently breathtaking views.
- Pictures not good sufficient for you? How regarding creating an audio log of what you're seeing? That's built-in too.
- Memory concerns? This device allows the use of microSD cards to exaggerate your capacity for sufficient picture snapping and audio logging well beyond a typical enthusiast's hunger.
- Worried in regards to the weather? This little device has got that in mind as well. It's waterproof and appears to be well-built for some good rain exposure. Haven't tested that aspect out, but just the general feel and build of this item has my wife sentiment wholly comfortable in any environment.
- Decent battery life. The device advertises 16 hours of neverending use. We didn't find ourselves wanting on a recent outing. However, you might want to pack galore extra batteries just in case. The battery issue is a pro/con for me; making it a AA-battery device makes it easy to get the requirement energy in a flash, but portion of me would have preferent a longer-laster lithium-ion charging solution. On the other hand, charging a lithium-ion device in the middle of nowhere leaves a lot to be desired as well. In the end, I gave it a thumbs-up.
- If you're mesmerized in "treasure hunting", the geocaching.com action might appeal to you. We didn't pursue it, but there is a 30-day free trial amount of time where you may hunt waterproof containers all over the US using your GPS device along with a subscription to the service. You may also add your own geocache for others to find. It's a distinguishable idea.

Road maps are likewise pre-loaded, but don't suppose this device to find the nearest Arby's for you; this is not what it's for. However, it does have more necessary points-of-interest like fire departments, hospitals, etc., ought to you find yourself in dire need of finding emergency assistance.

Other cool features include sun rise/set times, best hunt/fish times, alarm clock, etc. It's a neat little device that will fit most needs.

One other reviewer brought up that the compass isn't good when you're stationary. This is utterly correct. The GPS seems to key in on motion and using your differential x,y position to provide you with an exact compass heading...just do not forget to keep moving to get your bearings right. While moving, the compass is dead-on accurate.

For a beginner hiker (or perhaps even hunter/fisher!), this lowpriced hiking GPS is gorgeous cool and gets the occupation done.

5Makes other handheld GPS units look like toys
By fair_deal_guy
I neared the Magellan eXplorist 510 Waterproof Hiking GPS with no little amount of hesitation. I've used similar gimmicks in the past and they were riddled with shortcomings and seriously executed features. But the eXplorist 510 sets the bar higher than most competing models and does it with style.

The firstborn thing you detect when you open the box is 1) how little the actual unit is, and 2) how huge the color display is in relation to the rest of the case. This provides particular clarity and detail in a form factor that's perfectly suitable for even little hands.

The graphical user interface is exceptional. Setup is intuitive and easy, and the controls are logical and well placed. Getting from Start to real-time emplacement tracking takes less than a minute--which is very good performance giving careful consideration to the complexity of a device like this and the challenge of locking on satellite signals in wooded and urban areas.

I was peculiarly pleased with the breadth of features in a unit priced at just over $300. You get a first-class GPS with 3" touch screen, PC connectivity, 3.2 megapixel camera, alarm clock, MicroSD expandability, and full-featured paperless geocaching in a slim, light package.

This is unquestionably the unit to buy of you want a flexible, waterproof, feature-rich, and rugged handheld GPS.
