A GPS unit may be purchased in stores for anyplace amongst $100-$1000 dollars and allows a user to recognise their emplacement anyplace in the world. Unlike the GPS receiver the actual international positioning scheme is composed of approximately 30 satellites, which orbit the earth. Furthermore, at any time of the day, anyplace in the world, there will have to be at least 3 GPS satellites visible for a receiver (unit) to function properly. By using radio frequencies to contact the GPS network of satellites a receiver may pin-point a users emplacement by way of a procedure called three dimensional trilateration.

Originally the GPS scheme was produced by the United States Department of Defense, as a new means of tracking navigation. Ironically, GPS is free for civilians; any individual may pick up a unit at a local store and commence to recognise his or her emplacement immediately. In fact GPS has become so ordinary as a means to aiding navigation that map makers, surveyors, businesses and scientists use it as percentage of each day operations. A very utile feature of GPS is that it provides a precise time stamp permitting users to make calculations of their velocities as well as track their changes in locations.

There are minor errors with GPS; in fact sure troubles may occur if a user is next to huge objects such as buildings, canyons, tunnels, etc. The cause being that radio waves bounce off of huge objects, giving the impression that key satellites are father away than in reality. Originally users in big cities with skyscrapers experienced these difficulties rather frequently. In order to solve these troubles differential GPS (DGPS) was formulated as a means of providing more precise information. By sending out more frequencies, DGPS receivers could receive more precise data instantaneously resulting in less errors and transmission problems. In addition, DGPS units could reports latitudes, longitudes and altitudes of current locatings and included this data into maps, which were stored within the unit. Currently, you may use maps stored in a DGPS unit, you may download new maps, or connect your unit to a computer to concede you to find your way more accurately.

The most recent GPS receivers specifically have the following features; display how far you have traveled, how long you've been traveling, current speed, intermediate speed, a trail showing you where on the map you have traveled and may even display approximated times of arrival given current speeds. The technology has grown so much that a great deal of buyer productions have been fitted with GPS units. New cell phones, cars, rentals, boats and government vehicles have been fitted with positioning units; making travel safer and more reliable. In addition GPS is believed to have contributed to lower crime rates and in sure countries more outstanding compliance with speed limits.

Currently, according to the retailer Amazon.com, the top vehicle GPS units are: the Garmin Nuvi, Street pilot, Pocket Navigator, TomTom One and Magellan Maestro. On the other hand, for handheld units the most usual are: Garmin Forerunner, Lowrance iWay, Via Michelin and the Magellan Explorist. If you're fascinated in purchasing a unit, be sure to check buyer reports to determine the right GPS unit for your needs.

5a handy hard shell
By wogan
This hard shell travel case in truth works great, it is not perfectly hard, but has sufficient support to protect your GPS or whatsoever else you put in here from all normal abuse, excluding having a person stand on it. It is not as precisely as pictured here; it has 6 removable pockets that attach by Velcro, which actually work better. You may arrange the 6 pocketed holders anyway you wish and they each shut on an individual basis and so you have cases to hold whatsoever you have put in them. There are also cable "ties" that are likewise Velcro. I have a Magellan Roadmate and perfectly everything fits in here, with space to spare, including the car charger and the extra charger for in the house. The case is very neat looking and the zipper to close it feels very solid

5Great Case
By C. Conway
This is a great case for keeping everything together in one place. The only negative I may see is that the mount for the windshield does not fit inside this case, too.

4Premium Hard Shell Travel Case for Magellan GPS Roadmate
By C. Kynett
We were merely astonished that not only did the Roadmate fit inside, but so did the travel charger & the separately purchased dash mount with 'stand' (& it is a larger one!) with no problem. The Roadmate is now snuggly at home inside this hard shell case & we no longer have to worry when it comes to the 'screen' getting cracked or damaged, nor do we worry when it comes to losing the charger. The only drawback that we would want to mention even though is that the case doesn't fit underneath the seats of our Dodge Dakota due to the 'height' of the case. We may live with that though!
