  1. GPS is a satellite locating system relying on a series of geosynchronous satellites that send signals to your GPS device. The GPS translates these signals into a "triangulated" message in you GPS. The unit is able to then tell you almost exactly where you are on the surface of the Earth.
    GPS units help hikers know where they are in the woods, tell you where you are in your car (if it has a GPS display), allows the military to exactly locate the position of their own troops and also the positions of engaging troops and equipment, and, most recently, allows your cell phone to act as a locator for persons who might be lost, kidnapped, hurt, etc.
